Qualify for Medicare Earlier

for people with impaired vision or blindness

Post

People with impaired vision or blindness can qualify earlier for Medicare. Medicare Plans helps individuals who have impaired vision or are blind answer questions about Medicare eligibility, coverage, and enrollment. They also share additional resources for people with vision disabilities to help them navigate their Medicare options.

You normally won’t qualify for Medicare until you turn 65, but you can qualify sooner if you have impaired vision or blindness because it’s considered a disability. You may be eligible if:

  • You’re receiving SSDI: If you’ve previously held a job and paid into Social Security, your blindness or low vision may qualify you for Social Security Disability Insurance. After receiving SSDI benefits for 24 months, you’re eligible for Medicare, no matter your age.
  • You’re receiving disability benefits from RRB: The Railroad Retirement Board pays disability annuities for railroad workers who become totally or occupationally disabled.
